Protector US: how TRINCA adapted a digital insurance platform for the American market

How we took a 100% digital professional liability model to 50 regulatory jurisdictions, from quote to policy issuance.

Argo set out to transform the commercial insurance experience by making the entire journey faster, simpler, and fully digital. The objective was to reduce operational complexity, accelerate policy issuance, and deliver a seamless experience for brokers and policyholders without compromising regulatory compliance.

Achieving that vision required much more than building a digital platform. The solution had to support the regulatory and operational variations across all 50 U.S. jurisdictions, orchestrate state-specific business rules, pricing logic, legal requirements, and forms, while driving adoption through an intuitive user experience. The result was a platform capable of simplifying a highly complex operation without sacrificing compliance or performance.

Adapting a product to the world's most regulated insurance market

Argo's goal was to digitize the entire commercial insurance journey while maintaining regulatory compliance across all 50 states. The challenge was to streamline quoting, binding, and policy issuance without compromising the requirements unique to each jurisdiction.

Supporting all 50 states required much more than configuring a single platform. State-specific rating rules, legal requirements, forms, and operational exceptions had to work together within a single digital experience. The platform dynamically adapted to each jurisdiction, delivering a fast, consistent, and compliant journey from quote to policy issuance.

There was also an actuarial vocabulary specific to the category. Professional liability insurance works with concepts such as Prior Act Coverage (retroactive coverage for events prior to purchasing the policy), Retroactive Date (the date that preserves continuity of coverage when the insured switches carriers), Extended Reporting Period (an extended window to report a claim after the policy term ends) and First Dollar Defense (legal defense with no deductible). Each one has a direct impact on premium calculation and policy structure, and the product had to handle that complexity with precision.

The second axis of the challenge was technical. Because Protector US would not be born in isolation, it had to communicate natively with Argo's technological backbone:

  • CAPS, the corporate Policy Admin System;

  • an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), the layer that integrates corporate systems with one another;

  • the international ACORD XML standard, used for data exchange between insurers;

  • OFAC sanctions screening, run by the U.S. Treasury;

  • and Trillium address validation, along with the payment gateway.

Integrating with that legacy ecosystem was the most technically demanding part of the entire project. And at the center of it all sat an even bigger challenge: to quote, purchase and pay for a policy in under five minutes, with no human intervention, in any state, without giving up the technical and legal rigor the industry demands.

TRINCA's role: from discovery to production

Construction began with a deep understanding of the domain. TRINCA ran technical workshops with Argo’s technology team to map CAPS, the ESB, the OFAC and Trillium integrations and the ACORD standard. That immersion defined the architecture before the first line of code, reducing the risk of rework in a landscape full of particularities.

We ran this project with a dedicated, multidisciplinary squad that brought together product, engineering, mobile, UX and QA. The team worked in Scrum, with two-week sprints and four environments provisioned on Microsoft Azure: development, staging, UAT (the user acceptance testing stage) and production, each with its own telemetry.

Three priorities guided the decisions along the way:

  • Fidelity to state-by-state regulation, translated into rules configurable per jurisdiction, without simplifying what the law does not allow to be simplified.

  • Native integration with Argo's corporate ecosystem, so that Protector operated as part of the company rather than as a technological island.

  • Usability for the broker, without sacrificing the robustness a highly complex product requires.

The solution: six interfaces on a single set of rules

TRINCA architected Protector US as a complete platform, organized into six interfaces that share the same set of business rules, data and integrations.

Institutional Site — Conversion-oriented landing pages, with dedicated areas for Architects & Engineers, Accountants and brokers, plus analytics tracking and lead capture.

Quote & Purchase — Dynamic quoting, risk analysis, checkout and issuance in under five minutes.

My Protector — Web applications and native iOS and Android apps for managing policies, certificates, payments and First Notice of Loss (FNOL).

Broker Center — A self-service dashboard for the broker, with pipeline, campaign creation and Protector Circuit.

Manager Argo — A consolidated view of the operation for the insurer (brokerages, insureds, activations, claims and renewals).

Manager Underwriting — Product and coverage configuration and approval of pending endorsements.

Behind the interfaces, a few modules concentrated the product’s intelligence. The Rate Engine calculated the premium by combining state, product, retroactive period and additional coverages, reproducing in an automated and auditable way actuarial rules that previously depended on manual analysis. The Dynamic Form worked as a state machine, with conditional questions, real-time decline rules and actuarial factors tied to each answer, becoming a decision system that adapted the quoting journey to every user interaction.

The most demanding part, however, was not visible on screen. Connecting the platform to Argo’s Enterprise Service Bus meant translating every product event (issuance, endorsement, document import) into ACORD-standard XML transactions that CAPS could process, with key-based authentication and asynchronous messaging. Protector was the user-facing issuance layer, while CAPS remained as the system of record. Getting those two layers to talk to each other without friction is what turned a good digital product into an actual corporate operation.

A proprietary innovation reinforced this commercial ecosystem: Protector Circuit, a unique per-broker tracking code printed on every campaign piece, which automatically attributed the commission to the source of each sale.

Results: a single product going live for all 50 states

After go-live, what had traditionally taken up to 15 days in the traditional process was completed in under five minutes, from quote to payment.

Delivery figures:

  • regulatory coverage modeled for 50 states, each with its own rules;

  • 700 brokers migrated from the Argo Pro base as the operation's starting point;

  • 6 integrated interfaces on a single base of rules and data.

Before going live, the platform underwent a formal external security audit contracted by Argo, combining static code analysis and penetration testing in a live environment, following industry-standard references such as OWASP Top 10, DREAD, STRIDE and CheckMarx. The result was zero vulnerabilities for code injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), cross-site request forgery (CSRF), security misconfiguration or broken access control. For a platform that processes financial transactions, handles sensitive data under insurance regulation and integrates with a corporate system of record, this is a solid result, independently auditable.

Argo also presented Protector US to some of the largest American brokerages specialized in professional liability, among them Marsh, one of the largest in the world, and USI, among the ten largest in the United States. The product was built to sustain commercial dialogue with this client profile, and it was effectively made available to them.

A partnership that crosses borders and systems

Protector US shows what TRINCA does when the context is as demanding as it gets. It was not a project built from scratch, free of legacy-system integration, in a controlled environment. It was a product put into production in the world’s most sophisticated insurance market, with integration to the client’s system of record, regulatory compliance across 50 jurisdictions and contractual governance to international standards.

The experience consolidated a rare repertoire in insurance technology: digital quoting, a premium calculation engine, ACORD integration, broker management, a claims pipeline and native apps, all operating under regulation. This is the kind of background TRINCA brings to every new partnership: the ability to turn regulatory and technical complexity into a digital product that delivers real value.
